An uplifting performance by The Phoenix Choir has raised £1,000 for Cowes Sailability Club and paved the way for the club to start planning activities for disabled people during Cowes Week 2017.  The concert took place in September at the Cowes Methodist Church and was attended by a capacity audience of over 100 people.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the talented Phoenix Choir members and the enthusiastic audience, who gave their time and money to support Cowes Sailability Club,” says Patrick de Peyer, Commodore of Cowes Sailability Club.  “The funds raised will enable us to offer free boating trips for island people with disabilities during Cowes Week next year.  Adults and children with severe physical impairments, complex needs and learning difficulties will be able to experience the thrill of being on the water and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Robin Burnett, Musical Director of the Phoenix Choir, says: “The response to the publicity of the concert undertaken by Cowes Sailability was wonderful – to see a church filled to capacity is always a great motivator for any performance and the concert at Cowes Methodist Church was a truly enjoyable evening. The audience was very enthusiastic from beginning to end and the level of applause suggested that the choir was appreciated. The atmosphere in the church was warm and friendly and this always makes for a memorable occasion.”

The choir sang a wide-ranging programme of easy listening songs covering a number of musical genres, including of course for that particular evening, ‘Sailing’.  Other songs that generated a particularly loud applause from the audience included ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from the film ‘Titanic’, ‘Band Of Brothers’ from the TV series, and the 1970’s hit ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’.

Burnett adds, “The charity’s slogan ‘Putting Smiles on Faces’ was very apt from both the choir’s and the audience’s perspective. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable evening.”
