Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club not only hosted the summer barbecue but also presented a cheque
Members and volunteers of Cowes Sailability Club gathered at Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club (CCYC) for the annual summer barbecue. The party is one of several social events organised by Cowes Sailability Club every year, to enable people with disabilities to enjoy a relaxed evening out, in the company of people who are supportive and welcoming.
CCYC is a long-standing and vital partner for Cowes Sailability Club. All of the charity’s weekly sailing and boating activities for members take place from CCYC during the spring and summer months. CCYC also hosts many of Cowes Sailability Club’s social events, including the summer barbecue, and provides berthing for Cowes Sailability Club’s three Drascombe sailing boats.
During the summer barbecue, Richard Hargreaves, Commodore of CCYC, presented Roger Sutton, Commodore of Cowes Sailability Club, with a cheque for £720. This welcome donation had been raised by the CCYC Social Committee in events including a Boxing Day Auction and a Ladies Day Luncheon. “We are so grateful for the many ways in which the committee and members of CCYC support our work with disabled people,” says Roger. “From giving us somewhere to meet up weekly and berthing our boats, to supporting our social activities, we really couldn’t operate without them.”
Richard adds: “We have had the pleasure of working with and supporting Cowes Sailability for many years. Encouraging people of all abilities onto the water, to enjoy the delights it offers, is the ethos of CCYC, so long may the relationship last!”
Cowes Sailability Club volunteers and trustees cooked the sausages and burgers and served up the food with enthusiasm! Entertainment was provided by Steve Love, who played his guitar and sang songs as dusk set in, helping to create a relaxed and memorable evening for everyone.
“It was a great night, as always!” Roger says. “In a club like ours, that exists to help people with disabilities, it isn’t just about the sailing. It’s about providing the friendly and accessible environment where disabled people can meet each other and volunteers, and enjoy themselves. Our summer barbecue event is a great example of how we help people to live full and rewarding lives, beyond our water-based activities.”
