New members receive a warm welcome
Cowes Sailability Club has welcomed several new members this summer, some of whom are learning to sail and experiencing the thrill and excitement of water-based activities for the first time. Members have the opportunity to sail in the charity’s Drascombe Longboats on Monday afternoons, as well as participate in regular trips on a powerboat and yacht, which are both wheelchair accessible.
Damien Ward, Vice Commodore of Cowes Sailability Club, finds it incredibly rewarding to welcome new members to Cowes Sailability Club. “One of the most inspiring aspects has been seeing their confidence grow week by week,” he says. “Some people arrive having never sailed before, while others are experienced sailors who, because of disability, are no longer able to enjoy being on the water independently. Regardless of their background or experience, sailing has given everyone the opportunity to be out on the water, build confidence and enjoy the freedom, achievement and companionship that comes with being part of our club.”
New and existing members have a variety of physical and learning disabilities, as well as long-term medical conditions, including autism, visual impairments, stroke and neurological conditions, amongst others. Many have to deal with mobility problems, pain, discomfort, and difficulties with communication.
Improvements in pain levels, quality of sleep, general health, and the confidence that comes with overcoming challenges, are some of the many benefits enjoyed by members. Spending time in the fresh air having fun is life-enhancing, with many members reporting improved mental health and feelings of well-being.
New member Hugh says: “Sailability is fantastic. I was an active sailor until my eyesight started to go, but after retirement I discovered Cowes Sailability Club and have started sailing regularly again on Monday afternoons. The volunteers are all wonderful! The boat crews and those shoreside look after us and make sure that I don’t bump into anything. It is just great to be out on the water again and making new friends.”
Trying a new activity and meeting new people can sometimes be a daunting experience, but the volunteers at Cowes Sailability Club are on hand to offer support, encouragement and assistance, having an understanding of potential difficulties and finding ways to overcome them. Lives have been positively impacted by spending time in a welcoming environment, forming new friendships and enjoying the rewarding experience of learning a new skill.
Mary, another new member of Cowes Sailability Club, has appreciated many enjoyable and varied experiences since joining. “The sailing trips have been exciting and memorable with the added benefit of meeting and getting to know other club members. All of this was only possible because of the assistance I received from the very kind and friendly club volunteers.”
